Weather or Not
It’s Halloween. And LA is experiencing a series of days with darkened skies, intermittent rainfall and tropical sultry winds. Fitting for Halloween eve.
The tenor of LA changes when we have weather. That is, something other than sunshine. For many of us who have transplanted ourselves here from NY, it is a welcome change in the air. For a brief moment it feels like home. The scent of rain is comforting sometimes.
My NY friends are probably shivering back east as the temperatures drop to the 40’s in the evenings this week, thinking I’m insane to want clouds and rain.
But the weather fits the mood. A contemplative week. A little soul searching while the clouds roll in and the sky is streaked with the colors of the storm pending over LA.
It couldn’t be more beautiful as I stare out into my LA view of the city, sprawling out to the mountains beyond. My thoughts and the air are heavy with anticipation.
Enjoy what you can of life. Don’t let the wild ride we’re on right now spoil all your fun. I’ve taken the opportunities presented to me this week to lighten the mood. An evening at “Casita del Campo” in Los Feliz that is billed as the “perfect place to meet up with friends for chips and margaritas” and also is home to the underground cabaret venue that hosts over-the-top performance art. “Think Priscilla Queen of the Desert Funky” as the reviews state. Who knew you could have your mole sauce and also be entertained by the drag queens Jackie Beat and Jer Ber Jones. “The gruesome twosome -- two sisters: one’s a bitch and the other’s a witch.” Now if that doesn’t cheer you up, what will?
Maybe a night out with the girls, sharing sake and secrets? That was last night. Whatever works for you, just go do it. Give yourself a break.
And tonight, I’ll don my 1960’s mod, bell-bottomed jumpsuit, tease my bob, wear some ridiculously insane stilettos, slick my lips with Mary Quant frosted lipstick and attend the annual Halloween dinner party at Annie and Frank’s home. Last year, I was a black angel. I think my adjacent dinner companions were not too thrilled with being whipped by my black gossamer wings all night. I’ll be a little more contained this year, although I’ll look a little off kilter. I bit Edie Sedgwick after a long night, black eyeliner smeared.
Go out and have some fun tonight. Step outside yourself. Be someone/something else for an evening. Take advantage of being/looking silly for the night.
Happy Halloween everyone.
